Varanasi experiences tremendous amount of child labors engaged in cottage industries and hand weaving of Banarasi sari and other handicraft work. With span of time society, parents, industrialist sensitized on the issues of child labor due to consistent efforts by government and NGOs but in the new era of globalization the functioning of power looms and machines speed up in Varanasi & surroundings and other adjoining areas together, which resulted large scale unemployment in the handloom & handicraft  sectors.

This is worth mentioning here that the more than 4 Lakh people were directly or indirectly engaged in handloom sari sector and more than 70% handlooms have been closed down. The weavers started migrating to other cities such as Surat, Banglore, Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi in search of livelihood, leaving behind their families in the villages.
